Are you looking for a way to alleviate hair loss without the downtime associated with hair transplants? Though hair transplant procedures have come a long way, they can only move hair from place to place on your scalp, not make hair regrow.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections to stimulate hair growth are a technique rapidly gaining popularity. The procedure time is minimal, and they require little to no downtime. PRP can rejuvenate hair that is thinning or has stopped growing, though the earlier in the hair loss process, the better.

How PRP Works

PRP is the same technique used in the well-known Vampire Facial. It uses the healing factors in your own blood to stimulate the regeneration of tissue. In a facial, PRP encourages collagen growth to add fullness and volume to the face, and when used on the scalp, PRP can also aid the growth of hair follicles.

The procedure takes less than half an hour and does not require general or local anesthesia. Blood is drawn from your arm, then put through a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the blood’s other components. This latter mixture, containing the platelets that help your blood clot and skin heal after a cut, and plasma, the liquid medium that blood cells flow through, is prepared, then injected into the treatment areas on the scalp.

Since your own blood is being used, there is no risk of rejection. You may experience some minor swelling or discomfort, but an ice pack or Tylenol is usually sufficient to minimize pain. Unlike other hair transplant procedures, you can touch and style your hair just a day or two after the procedure. Treatments are usually performed 3 sessions, 6 weeks apart, with maintenance required yearly. Results start to become visible after several months.
