Is It Difficult For You To Breathe Through Your Nose?

Do you find it challenging to breathe through your nose, or even just one-side of it? A “deviated septum”  occurs when the septum of the nose  is shifted away from the midline. This is why people with a deviated septum often state they have difficulty breathing. . The difficulty is usually worse on one side, and sometimes actually occur on the side opposite of the bend of the septum. Further, other symptoms can be  inadequate sinus drainage which often results in continuous sinus infections. Additionally, it is common that a deviated septum  occur after nasal trauma.

Surgical treatment to  to correct a deviated septum is the most preferred and most successful resolution. With that said, this surgery  is not typically recommended for those under 18 years of age, as the cartilaginous septum is still growing.

Septoplasty is a  surgical procedure (often deemed as medically necessary and may even be covered by your health insurance)  to straighten the nasal septum (the divider that is  between the two nostrils). Ideally, the septum should run down the center of the nose. When it deviates, or curves to one side, it narrows that nostril cavity and minimizes airflow. These symptoms may also lead to snoring and sleep apnea.   A Septoplasty procedure usually entails realignment of the bone and/or cartilage in the nasal cavity. The surgery may be done along with other procedures to treat chronic sinusitis, inflammation, bleeding, correct sleep apnea, or even in conjunction with a Rhinoplasty (aesthetic improvements).
