Excess Sweating or Hyperhidrosis- How can it be treated?

Everyone sweats, but sometimes, some people suffer from excessive sweating, called Hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a common disorder that affects many people, with Palmar Hyperhidrosis or sweaty palms being the most common form. Other forms of Hyperhydrosis are excessive foot, underarm and facial sweating.

This condition is usually uncontrollable and embarassing for those affected with it and some suffer from severe physiological consequences such as cold and clammy hands and dehydration. Those affected are constantly aware of their condition and try to modify their lifestyle to accommodate this problem which can become draining on ones life.

Luckily, there is now an FDA approved treatment for Hyperhydrosis… Botox!

Botulinum toxin, Botox, is a neurotoxin that can temporarily weaken muscle and is most commonly used as a cosmetic treatment for wrinkles. Botox has also been used in the treatment of muscle spasms and certain types of headaches as well, and now its latest use is for the treatment of excessive underarm and palm sweating.

The Botox is injected into areas in each armpit or the palm and may produce up to six months of relief from sweating. The injections can be uncomfortable, but use of numbing cream and a very small injection needle makes them tolerable. When injecting the palm, injections can cause more discomfort and may require nerve blocks to numb the hands in order to make the injections more comfortable.

Now that this treatment has received FDA approval for hyperhidrosis, many health insurers are providing coverage for the injections and the Botox itself, which is quite costly.
