It is true that a frown is nothing more than a smile turned upside down. The muscle that causes a smile is U-shaped band running under the lower lip and connects up towards the jaw joint.
There are people who look like they are constantly frowning. On a daily basis I have patients in the office that say ” I’m so tired and frustrated with constantly being told I look angry, or asked what’s wrong.”
For some women, the mouth looks downturned due to over activity by the muscles at the corners of the mouth. A simple 5 minute treatment with 2 tiny injections of botox can easily remedy this problem. This treatment blocks the action of the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle that causes your mouth to look turned down, while still allowing you to smile and look natural. The treatment will last a few months, and if you just treat the area around your mouth the cost will likely be a few hundred dollars.
If you’re young, chances are your downturned mouth is due to the DAO muscle overactivity. In some cases, repeated Botox treatments will cause the muscle to atrophy over time and require less frequent visits.
