The Demand for Cosmetic Surgery Has Soared During the Pandemic, Here’s Why

As countries across the globe shut down in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, the waitlists for cosmetic surgeons began rapidly filling up.

The demand for treatments and procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, and liposuction all saw increases anywhere from 24% to 64%.

With the world in turmoil, people were increasingly turning to plastic surgeons and cosmetic enhancements.

Why? There are several reasons.

Virtual consultations made it easier to seek options

The convenience of telemedicine consultations made it easier for patients to get information about the benefits of cosmetic surgery before committing to an in-person appointment. This had the added benefit of allowing doctors to build rapport with patients and address any concerns they may have.

Working from home allowed more time for recovery

The sudden shift to working from home as the new norm provided the downtime that patients needed to recover from surgery. Many people now have the option to continue working as they heal from their procedures in the privacy and comfort of their homes.

Spending habits have shifted

Many of the ways that people used to spend their income are not options during the pandemic. With people spending less on vacations and travel, nights out at restaurants and bars, and spending sprees at malls and boutiques, they have more money available for improving their appearance.

Zoom has made us more self-conscious

Teleconferencing apps have turned the camera on ourselves, and made us more aware of our double chins, wrinkles, and other aspects of our appearance that we feel insecure about, prompting many to seek out options, such as Botox, to address their subtle imperfections.

Quarantine weight gain is impacting our self-esteem

With all of the uncertainty, stress, and isolation posed by the pandemic, many turned to food for comfort. Stress amps up the production of a cortisol, a hormone that triggers food cravings and makes it more difficult to burn fat. Weight gain that is related to stress is often more difficult to get rid of on your own, so liposuction and abdominoplasty have become increasingly popular as a way to control weight.
