Read on for the most common surgeries included in a Mommy Makeover.
Pregnancy is beautiful and heroic. For an average of 40 weeks, a woman’s body is home to a tiny, growing human. Carrying a child often results in permanent changes to the body, including stretch marks, sagging breasts and stretched abdominal muscles.
A Mommy Makeover is the general term for a combination of different surgeries performed simultaneously to restore areas of the body altered during pregnancy to their pre-pregnancy state.
Essentially, it’s a full body makeover.
Because the body changes in so many fundamental ways while carrying children, many women opt to undergo a Mommy Makeover after they’ve finished having kids.
Each Mommy Makeover can be an individualized combination of the following surgeries:
- Breast Augmentation
- Breast Lift
- Liposuction
- Tummy Tuck
- Vaginal Rejuvenation
- Brazilian Butt Lift
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ 2023 Procedural Statistics Report, of the 1.6 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed, over 1 million were breast augmentations, breast lifts, liposuction and tummy tucks. All four procedures had an increase of between 2% and 7%.
Fees for Mommy Makeovers are between $10,000 and $20,000 with a recovery time of 1 to 2 months.
Following are all of the basics about the most common Mommy Makeover surgeries.
Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty
Many women gain a significant amount of weight during their pregnancies and lose it at some point after giving birth. A tummy tuck removes excess overhanging abdomen skin and tissue that results from this fluctuation, while also tightening the abdominal muscles.
The end result: a tight, toned tummy.
You can get a full or mini tummy tuck. The difference is during a mini tuck, not as much skin is removed, the scar is not as long, and the original belly button is not removed – but its position may change.
During the tummy tuck, doctors can also treat abdominal and umbilical hernias depending on the type and severity.
Another added plus? Irreversible stretch marks developed on the stomach during pregnancy are often removed during a tummy tuck.
Breast Augmentation
Augmentation Mammoplasty
Weight changes, fluctuating hormone levels, and breastfeeding can result in deflated post-baby boobs.
A breast augmentation increases the symmetry, size and fullness of your breasts, usually using a silicone or saline implant inserted into the skin.
You can also have fat removed from a different part of your body and transferred into your breasts to add volume.
Moms can breastfeed after a breast augmentation and don’t need to wait until they’re done having children, but since this changes the shape of your breasts, it may make more sense to wait until later in life to get the procedure.
Breast Lift
Mastopexy
As we age, skin loses its elasticity, and sometimes pregnancy speeds this up. A breast lift removes the excess breast skin envelope, reshapes the tissue, and moves the nipples and areolas to more central places on the breast for a perkier appearance. Surgeons can perform a breast lift at the same time as a breast augmentation.
Liposuction
Suction-Assisted Lipectomy
A fan-favorite among plastic surgery clients, liposuction permanently removes fat using minimally invasive suction technology.
Even for women who haven’t had children, liposuction removes fat from “stubborn” areas that can’t simply be achieved through exercise and healthy eating habits.
Liposuction can be performed using tumescent, super wet or ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty techniques.
The focus is on creating areas of contour, so it’s not advised to have liposuction if your main goal is losing a lot of weight.
Vaginal Rejuvenation
Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Like a Mommy Makeover, vaginal rejuvenation is actually made up of multiple surgeries that target the size, shape, and function of the vaginal area by restoring soft tissue structures.
Patients consider a combination of procedures including narrowing the vaginal canal that may have widened during birth, clitoral hood reduction, labiaplasty, labia majoraplasty, monsplasty and vaginoplasty.
Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Surgery isn’t the only option for achieving a tightened and smoothed vagina. There are other optoins that are noninvasive, less expensive, take between five and 30 minutes, and cause minimal welling.
CO2 laser treatment heats the upper layers of vaginal tissues which causes the lower layers to produce more collagen, tightening and firming the skin. Popular laser brands include FemTouch and FemiLife.
Radio frequency treatments encourage collagen and elastin production, along with blood flow, by using electromagnetic waves to heat vaginal tissue. This gives your cells flexibility and aids in rejuvenating sagging.
Both of these procedures are done in a doctor’s office and without anesthesia. Gynecologists, plastic surgeons, and dermatologists all perform non-surgical vaginal rejuvenations. The results are temporary (1- 3 years) and are said to appear between 2 to 6 months after the treatment so patience is necessary.
Brazilian Butt Lift
Gluteal Augmentation with Fat Transfer
Lovingly known as a BBL, this fat transfer surgery results in a firmer, rounder, larger butt without adding any implants.
Liposuction is applied to the hips, thighs, abdomen, and lower back to extract fat that’s then purified and injected back into specific points in the buttcheeks.
The BBL can be a three-for-one deal, leaving patients with a firmer butt, a more hourglass shape and fat reduction in other parts of their body.
