The eyes. The nose. The smile. This is the order in which people see us, and the nose being the most projecting of the three.
Rhinoplasty is the second most popular surgery performed each year in the United States for both men and women. Since the nose can become a central focus of the face as well as the most pronounced from the side, many opt to have rhinoplasty in order to straighten the bridge of the nose, reshape the tip, reduce or add to the overall size of your nose as well as change the angle between the nose and upper lip. However, having a rhinoplasty can do more then just create a more aesthetically pleasing nose. Rhinoplasty can correct some breathing problems in some patients, specifically for those who may have a deviated septum or previous nasal trauma.
Nose surgery is considered “elective” when it is done for cosmetic reasons. Many surgeons do not like to perform cosmetic nose surgery until the nasal bone has finished growing (around age 14 or 15 for girls, a bit later for boys).
When opting to have your nose done, there are two different techniques or approaches to perform a rhinoplasty. One technique is an open approach and the other is a closed approach. In an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made in the columella, which is the little column of skin that separates the two nostrils. That incision allows the nasal skin to be lifted off of the tip of the nose. In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made internally with no visible external scars.
After your procedure is completed, a splint, internal tubes, or packing will likely be placed inside your nose and a splint placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during the initial healing phase. You will follow up with Dr. Danielpour and Dr. Layke a week after your surgery when packing or splint are typically removed.
The nose can take up to a year to heal completely and have a final aesthetic outcome, but most patients return to work within a week of surgery, and back to full activity with no restrictions within six weeks.
