Enhancing Your Appearance With An Arm Lift – Brachioplasty

Fluctuations in weight, growing older and even heredity can cause your upper arms to have a drooping, sagging appearance making some people self conscious to wear those tank tops, halter tops or cute strapless cocktail dresses. While exercise may strengthen and improve muscle tone of the upper arm, any loss of elasticity or underlying weakened tissues usually cannot be addressed by exercise alone.

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, reduces excess skin and fat between the underarm and the elbow which in turn reshapes your arm to result in smoother skin and a more toned and proportionate appearance. Brachioplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia. Depending on your goals and what you have to work with, the incision may be placed in various areas such as the back of the upper arm, or inside the arm between the biceps and triceps muscles. In those with a larger amounts of excess skin, an additional incision in the armpit may also be recommended. After the initial incision, liposuction is performed to reduce the volume of the arm tissue and the excess skin is excised according to the artistic markings placed by  preoperatively. Temporary closure is completed and further liposuction performed to fine tune the shape of the arm prior to placement of a drain tube (if necessary) and final closure. Dressings consist of skin glue and/or tapes and a compressive garment is placed to minimize swelling and assist in healing and the achievement of the desired shape. The support garment is to be worn at all times for the first 4-6 weeks after surgery to help  swelling and help shape the arms.
