Chin Augmentation

While most are not be looking to get the “Jay Leno” chin, many people just aren’t satisfied with their chin. Those who feel their face lacks a certain amount of proportion often have their chin altered to enhance their profile. A weak chin can make a normal nose appear large and an already prominent nose seem even larger. It can also make your neck look overly fleshy. Usually, a chin implant provides a more harmonious balance to your face and features so you feel better about the way you look, especially in profile.

Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, can be as simple as injecting a temporary soft tissue augmentation filler to implanting a silicone chin implant in order to improve facial symmetry. Some patients may opt for a rhinoplasty as well in order to provide even better balance to the face. Chin augmentation operations can last thirty minutes to one and one-half hours, depending on the circumstances of your case and the procedures can be performed with either a local or general anesthetic, depending on patient and surgeon preferences. Usually, the chin is taped after surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. Sutures are usually removed in five to seven days and a patient may be asked to wear a supporting brace during the day or at night to allow your implant to heal in the best position possible and prevent shifting in the first few weeks after your surgery. Swelling usually disappears within the first five to seven days and many patients return to work, with the help of some make up camouflaging, within five days after the surgery. However, numbness and discomfort may continue for two to three months after.
