Not EVERYONE desires large breasts. Often times, we always want what we don’t have but when it comes to naturally large breasts, let’s face it…it can be a pain in the neck, and the back!

Having naturally enlarged breasts can really take a toll on one’s body. Large breasts can cause poor posture, causing severe neck and back problems and even limit one’s physical activity due to the added weight. Why live miserably when you can improve your life with a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure where some of the tissue and skin from the breasts are removed to reduce the size and reshape the breasts, in addition to lifting them into a more youthful and perky position. Breast reduction surgery is done to change the size, weight, firmness, and shape of the breasts.

At Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group, both Dr. Layke and Dr. Danielpour specialize in performing Breast Reduction Surgery. The surgery typically takes anywhere from 2-4 hours to perform and is commonly done in our Beverly Hills state-of-the-art, fully- accredited ambulatory surgery center. The surgery can also be performed in a hospital. Both Dr. Danielpour and Dr. Layke have privileges at local hospitals here in Beverly Hills/Los Angeles such as Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Olympia Hospital, and Glendale Adventist.

Women who have breast reduction surgery are always extremely satisfied. The results of breast reduction surgery are considered permanent, but breasts may become larger or their shape may alter as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, or weight gain. With Breast Reduction Surgery, breasts can be made smaller, firmer, lighter, and more evenly proportioned while also relieving the physical discomfort and pain caused by large breasts.

All surgeries carry some potential risks. It is important to understand those potential risks when opting for a Breast Reduction (and trust me, the benefits certainly out-weigh the risk!) Here are some potential risk involved with Breast Reduction Surgery:

  • Scars. Breast reduction surgery requires incisions on the breasts. But how visible the scars will be varies from person to person. Although red and swollen at first, scars typically fade over time, though scars may remain more noticeable in some women long after surgery. Fortunately, the incisions usually can be limited to areas of the breast that can be covered by a bra, and bikini top.
  • Unevenly positioned nipples/areolas, or breasts that are not the same size or shape.
  • Loss of feeling (numbness) in the nipples or breasts. This is typically temporary, but in some women it can be permanent. Because some women with large breasts do not have a lot of feeling in their breasts before surgery, this may not be a concern.
  • Inability to breast-feed, or breast-feed well after surgery. Some women may still be able to breast-feed, depending on what type of reduction was done.
  • Even less common, damage to the breast’s blood supply may occur during surgery. Loss of part or all of the nipple and areola can also occur, but this is not likely.
  • Excessive bleeding during surgery.
  • Infection.
  • Reaction to the anesthesia.

The recovery from breast reduction surgery is relatively quick and extremely tolerable. No strenuous exercise is typically advised for about 4 weeks following the surgery, but most are pleasantly surprised that they are back to driving, and a desk job in about 5-7 days.

If you are thinking about having a breast reduction and have health insurance, you might want to consider contacting your health insurance company. Some insurance companies cover partial or even full costs of breast reduction based on the medical necessity for the surgery. Insurance will NOT cover breast reduction surgery if they see it in any way as being “cosmetic”.

Breast reduction surgery can improve your way of living, your self-image, and your life! So stop thinking about it…and DO IT!
