What is the difference between Cohesive Silicone Gel and Gummy Bear Breast Implants, or are they the same thing?

By July 25, 2011 No Comments

Gummy Bear Breast???!!!

“Gummy bear” breast implants are breast implants that are filled with a semi-solid, highly cohesive (high-strength, allowing the substance to be stuck together) silicone gel, surrounded by a thick, strong, multi-layered outer silicone shell. When the cohesive, or gummy bear implant, is cut in half, it maintains its shape, just like a piece of gummy candy does, (like a gummy bear, hence the nickname). It’s soft and pliable, and yet it has that cohesive nature that allows it to keep its shape, if ever the outer shell should lose its integrity.

Many patients and doctors describe the most commonly used silicone, cohesive gel breast implants of today as gummy bear implants for its quality. No to be confused with the patent name “Gummy Bear” Implants.

Gummy bear implants are available only in an anatomical, or “tear-drop” shape, meaning they are fuller at the bottom than at the top. Therefore, it is important that the implants not move around inside the body, since a position shift could result in an odd appearance. To help secure the implants in place, the outer shell has a textured surface to encourage better tissue adherence. Not every Doctor can offer “Gummy Bear” implants. The enrollment of patients and doctors are not available at this current time due to further research and studies that are needed.

So, why would one prefer the actual “Gummy Bear” Implants? While the general theory behind these implants is an expected lower risk of silicone leakage and migration, these expectations cannot be proven (or disproved) until the 10-year post-implantation findings can be reviewed. (As of October 2009, only the 3-year data is in.)

The great news is, since the FDA re-approved  silicone gel breast implants in 2006, which  now allows you to have plenty of choices when it comes to breast implants. They are low-bleed, and highly durable breast implants most commonly used in the United States currently. The leading manufactures for these breast prosthesis are Allergan and Mentor Corporations.
