What are Cosmeceuticals?

By April 6, 2012 No Comments

Cosmeceuticals: I’m sure you’ve heard this “buzz word” at least a few times by now.  So what does it mean?

Cosmeceutical is a made up word to signify the blending of drug like ingredients or pharmaceuticals with cosmetics. It is therefore, a product with “active ingredients” that effect structure and function of the skin, and/or are formulated to treat/prevent disease or specific skin conditions.

Sounds great doesn’t it!

The benefits of cosmeceuticals can be amazing. However, it is equally important for you to know that most cosmeceuticals are not currently regulated by the FDA- so buyer beware- do not believe every claim that you hear on TV or read about in a magazine. Seek professional advice!

When done safely & properly cosmeceuticals help to radically improve the appearance of the skin for Age Fighting, Exfoliating, Conditioning, Repair & Protection benefits.

At Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group, Dr.’s Danielpour & Layke along with our Clinical Skin Care Specialist, custom blend cosmeceutical products specific to your individual needs.

Some of our favorite formulations include:
Cellular Renewal– This formula takes traditional “Retin-A” to the next level. A blend of tretinoin aka “retin-a” with Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)- adds potent antioxidants to protect and repair skin. Studies have shown that in addition to the amazing anti-aging and acne-relieving benefits of Retin-A, niacinamide helps to reduce fine lines & wrinkles, reduce hyperpigmented spots, reduce red blotchiness and skin sensitivity, improve clarity & elasticity. This product is typically the cornerstone to a powerful “at home” anti-aging program.

Firm & Repair Vitamin C Serum– This serum does exactly what it says: Firms & Repairs! These ingredients produce the results:

DMAE: aka Dimethylethanolamine–related to Choline (B vitamin) in the body DMAE is processed by the liver into choline. Topically it protects skins elasticity, helping to tighten and firm skin.

Vitamin C: Powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, skin brightener, stimulates collagen production- has been shown to increase collagen production by 25% in 72 hrs. Works to brighten skin by inhibiting overproduction of melanin and protecting from sun
damage. Vitamin C helps to decrease the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles and help prevent their formation.

Acetyl hexapeptide-8: aka Argireline. Relaxes facial tension, similar to effects of Botox. Studies have shown a 30% reduction in wrinkles in 30 days.

Hyaluronic Acid: A naturally occurring skin lubricant, it holds 1,000 times its weight in moisture helping to plump cells with hydration. As we age, hyaluronic acid production stops. We need hyaluronic acid to protect against loss of volume, tissue damage and aid in the regeneration of healthy skin.
