Downsizing Your Breast Implants

By October 9, 2012 No Comments

When most people think of breast implants, they think of large, voluptuous breasts, such as Pamela Anderson, Dolly Parton or Anna Nicole Smith. But while the big breast look was once all the rage in Hollywood, nowadays more starlets are downsizing their large breast implants for more modest ones.

Celebrities who have downsized in recent years allegedly include Denise Richards, Victoria Beckham, Drew Barrymore and Heather Morris from Glee. Taken together they represent a trend toward breast implants being smaller than was previously fashionable.

What are the reasons for this new trend towards smaller breasts? For one, many women no longer want or need the extra attention toward their breasts and are looking for a more comfortable and natural look. Also after a previous augmentation surgery, there may be misalignment and/or capsular contracture which have made the implants look unnatural. Finally, many women find after breast augmentation that is it more difficult to exercise or perform other physical activities or end up having some back problems due to the extra weight.

While surgery to reduce implant size involves simply exchanging one implant for smaller one, there is usually some reconstruction required, since the pocket housing the implant needs to be modified and a breast lift may be necessary if there is any sagging skin as well.   Risks of the surgery are similar to regular augmentation surgery, but the recovery time is typically shorter.
